Overview

Indian Railways operates one of the world's largest and most comprehensive railway networks. The Ministry of Railways, Government of India, operates and controls it. The history of Indian Railways may be traced back to 1853, when the first train in India operated between Mumbai (then Bombay) and Thane. Indian Railways operates a huge network that connects cities, towns, and villages across the country. It is separated into zones, and each zone is further divided into divisions, with these divisions in charge of managing train operations in certain locations.
